Thank you for your replies. I have 2 questions:
[In the meantime, does it help if you push toward the ground as you
move it
into first? I've started doing that after a couple grinds. I'm not
sure if
my bushing is warn, or if I just had a tendency to lift up slightly upon
seleting first gear.

Brian- I'll try that. So, if it were working properly would I have
to pull up on the shifter to get into reverse?
[I 'repaired' the worn plastic bushing in the Frankenheap's shifter
using Shoe Goo. Helped a lot.
