Wasn't there a "kit" offered by MB to move the cats out of the engine
compartment?

Seen this, but not on this car.  Visually the exhaust was good,
and I'd long ago convinced myself the problem was not in the exhaust
pipe path itself.

No, mine are just fine, now!  The manifold's boss isn't even broken.
My idea, if I kept the car long term, was to eventually replace the
catifold with a more normal one, assuming I could find one that fit.
(I always thought the mating point in space for at least some non-cat
manifolds was the same, but I have no proof of that.)  The improvement
to serviceability under the hood would be unbelievable.  I bet the
underhood heat soak would be lessened a lot too.

I eyed a set of 450 SEL manifolds I saw one day at the U-Pull, but by
then we'd already determined to sell the car so I didn't try to get
them.
