I have a single pump mounted outside near the tank, maybe variation due to
euro model.

1990 300se/ 103 engine
I'm fighting something similar on my '92 300e; have you checked to see
that 1) the fuel pumps are getting power when this happens and 2) that
both pumps are working? On mine I found that one pump was dead and
the other was getting intermittant(!). Replacement parts should
arrive today.
