Plugged prefilter will do the same thing. Almost got run over on I-70 because it wouldn't do more then 45 uphill. pulled over, reached in the ammo can for the spare and the 4-way, changed it out, and all was well. The old prefilter actually held vacuum (it would not drain!) due to algae deposits on it.
Prior to the change, the car actually ran pretty decently -- for the first 10 miles after startup. Then it would lose power if you pushed it -- like you just took your foot off the pedal. At first I thought "ALDA tube" and then I realized that it was just not getting any fuel.
