I dunno whats the issue with the mavica, but I am wondering if it has to do 
with following the appropriate "book" when it comes to multisession discs. As 
far as the server issue, ummm If you are talking about an NFS server (Macs 
should use NFS for file sharing with OSX if I recall properly), then I would be 
surprised. If we are talking about an SMB server (ie windows) then I would not 
be surprised.Microsoft does not play very well with others.. this is not 
accidental.

neooffice will run under os x without doing the X11 thing.  not sure how
well though as i haven't used it much
