That's a bit harsh, it can happen that the connector is worn out and won't tighten onto the post even tough the nut is tight. Although with experience it becomes second nature to be aware of this. As a general rule if there is no space between the arms of the connector when it is tightened onto the post, it is time to replace the connector. It is possible that the battery post is either too small or has been cleaned that many times it is undersize. Just a reminder, always remove the negative connector first and connect it last.
