On my 300TD, most of the friction was in the steering wheel lock mechanism. With the lock cylinder removed, I squirted some light machine oil into the mechanism and it really seemed to help. But I replaced the lock anyway.
After having to have the lock assembly in my 82 300SD cut out, I never want to have to do that again. I have a new spare (non-matching) cylinder that I'll pop in at the first sign of trouble while waiting for one cut to match the car. My recollection is that it is best to use something like powdered graphite even though it can be a bit messy. Wonder if it helps if the lock is not dismantled and cleaned first?
