No, not a requirement except for bugs, sun, skeeters and mostly for leaves that fall into the pool. I doubt if I would put in a pool without one where I live now. Lots of big trees. Partly I suppose it is also that most everyone seems to have one. There are actually a lot of homes with pools where they are either not needed or folks just didn't want to bother.
