Shoot. Guess my thinking (or lack thereof) was faulty on that. Guess
it would be safer with the cylinder installed since the thief would
need your key to turn the ignition? And he/she would probably not be
aware that with a paper clip they could have it out?

I just thought the sight of a missing ignition switch might put off
some would-be thiefs. Maybe not the experienced ones.
