I have been told that the conventional wisdom that first-generation 4-Matics are money pits is no longer true, the reason being that most are now on their third or fourth transfer case, and Mercedes finally got the design right after numerous in-the-field refinements (sort of like 603 heads). Small comfort! For similar comfort and performance with way more reliability and parts availability, though, I'd pick any late 5-cylinder Audi Quattro.
