What Wikipedia leaves out is that Mercedes was using five-speed
automatics as early as 1990. For the North American market, SWB W140
3.2L cars were all five speeds, first 722.502, then 722.508 and 722.605.
LWB were only .508 and .605.

In the rest of the world, the 3.2L had two .3xx four-speeds, two .5xx
five-speeds, and the .605 five-speed; also available was a 717.454
five-speed manny. Similar progression for the 2.8L, except it started
out with a .4xx.
