Just to let you know that I had a 87 300D that had a failure in the idler 
belt bearing that pretty much stopped the car. It happened at a signal light 
and when I tried to restart the car it appeared that the starter was slow.

Had it towed home and replaced the starter only to have the same problem. I 
suggest taking the belts off and making sure that all the pulleys spin free!
