Well the fluke non-contact voltage tester is < $30 I believe. Also if you look at say http://ca.fluke.com/caen/promotions/demoEquipment/default.asp?pagestep=2&locale=caen (canada, but usa should have a site) you can sometimes nab quite a decent fluke product for *much* less.
