If he drove it until it started losing power and now it doesn't really 
work, probability that the engine is damaged approaches one.

What is the idle oil pressure now and at what rpm does it reach three 
bar?  Remove and disassemble the oil filter; it is probably full of 
metal shavings.  Ditto the oil pan.

You've got a rusty wagon with a good engine, right?
