A groaning sound under those conditions would be consistent with a substantial frame crack. If you want a really good weld, find the local guy who is building a tubing frame homebuilt airplane, or a good A+P mechanic with emphasis on the A! When you weld on airframes, you don't want failures.
I saw the frame for a university solar car several years back. I would not have even sat in it in a stationary position, mush less in a solar race. I didn't see one decent weld on the whole tube frame. Those guys are practicing engineers today. Scary! Give me a German-trained machinist any day! (don't mean to offend you P.E.s on the list, but I am sure you have seen similar things.)
