It depends on what your QTP test does. If it works with UI (that's a usual behaviour of QTP tests) then I'm afraid you cannot work on your computer. Otherwise controls can lose focus, you can change the current active window, etc. As a result, your QTP tests will fail.
If your QTP script doesn't interact with UI (for example, it copies folders & files), then sure you can work in background.
