pooja, Yes we do use checkpoints, recovery scenarios, functions, regular expressions, descriptive programming, etc. in our projects. Please ask questions about specific problem you have, when you work on projects. And there is one more thing, please check in a dictionary what "real-time" means http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real-time_computing
