There may be multiple reasons for this to happen.. Give a try for the below
-- First Install IE7 and see if it works. If the browser is getting closed even with IE 8 the follow the below steps > Re-install the whole QTP on your system > Re-install the IE8 This is a very peculiar issue. One of my friend also is not able to use the IE8 or IE7 on one of his machine but on the other it works perfectly. This is what i can suggest as of now. Will keep you posted if i get more information on this. Note: If ur OS is Vista try with XP just incase..........
