If you are performing manual testing, then you need smoke testing to
check the stability of a build.
In smoke testing, tester selects the the test cases, that cover basic
functionality of the application.

In Automation there is parallel concept,we call it as 'health check'.
Here, test scripts with basic functionality are selected and are run.
If more and more number test cases are failing due to one or more
reasons, then it might be possible that build is not stable one.

Or you can also record a session of application (In QTP) and use
checkpoints. If application is not stable then test case may always
fail.

Better is the smoke testing and or health check ,better is the
stability of the build.
