so if you application is not web or windows, i think you need to have add in for other technology (java, .net, sap ect) . without add-in QTP is not useful because you can not identify objects properly and if you can not identify your applications then can't associate methods.
Object identification is unique property of QTP which makes it distinct from other tools. you can use other open source tools like Ruby-JVM or selenium to over come cost. ......
