Well, my workflow for developing a Merkaartor style and also for verifying the map is that I look at an area zoomed out, and then zoom in on the nodes that might have a problem because they show the generic icon. But when zooming in, I might then see that they do in fact have their own icon and it was just a bogus alarm :) I agree that for a map *viewer*, showing a dot is very useful so that the user knows that it's worth taking a closer look, but for a map editor, I'm doubtful. Transforming explicitly assigned icons to a dot when zoomed out would be good (to reduce map clutter), but I would want the nodes without tags still stand out as flags.
