Hi!
Hmm... Alining should work something like this - first two nodes selected
should determine the line and all other nodes should be lined on the same
line...
First and second node stays where they are and all other nodes align to
north-south line the first node is on... I quess this is a bug

The code is not mine, and while I can find very useful to be able to align
nodes as to create straight roads, I'm not even sure that was the intent and in
anyway, I'm as puzzled as you as how to use it.

What does the menu command Nodes, Align do? I've found the source code
for it [1], and I understand that the operation requires at least 3
nodes selected, with the first two not at the same position. But all
that angle arithmetics [2] in the code don't make any sense to me. Nor
does the observable behaviour. When I select multiple nodes, the Align
command seems to move some of them north/south of one of them and leaves
one node where it was. This doesn't look useful to me.

    [1] Map/FeatureManipulations.cpp - alignNodes(...) - line 283
    [2] Map/Coord.cpp - rotate(...) - line 22
