I'm suffering the very same problem

My computer specs:

AMD Phenom II 955 (4x3.2 GHz)
4 GB RAM
Debian testing amd64
Kernel: 2.6.32-trunk-amd64
latest (as of last week) merkaartor svn

It hangs when "parsing XML", but if you wait (a LOT), it finish.
I have monitored it with top, and in my case it's not a memory problem, but one
core at 100% until it finish, and it can take up to 10 minutes, or even more.
merkaartor's memory use was high (~1 GB), but machine had about 2 GB free at
that moment, and of course no swap trashing.

I'm having the same problem, for example, moving roads.

I will try to reproduce it at home, and send you one concrete case, but I
wanted to note that it's not an "XP only" problem.
