Old stuff but I think I found the problem.

Merkaartor automatically saves its its lists (bookmarks, TMS, WMS) to OSM as
user preferences.
The problem was probably that you once deleted the TMS and it got saved in
OSM. As Merkaartor was overwriting the local prefs with the OSM ones, your
"nearmap" entry got deleted every time.

For non-svn users, the solutions are:
- To delete their user preferences on OSM (unfortunately, I don't remember
how to do that) and to modify their ~/.merkaartor to remove the
"deleted:true" flag.
- or to recreate the entry with a different name

This just got solved in svn/git by giving the local preferences the highest
priority.
