Okay, next silly question...

How long should it take to copy and paste features from one layer to the other?

I have no idea how much work is happening behind the scenes, but this
process can take quite a while.

Granted I am asking Merkaartor to move a lot of data.

I tell Merkaartor to find all features with the natural:wood tag. On a
Canvec tile, I can get a couple hundred hits. In those couple hundred
hits, there can be around 10,000 nodes or so.

The task of finding and highlighting all the features happens pretty
quickly. No problem there. Then I hit copy. That can send the computer
off on its own for a little bit, maybe 10 to 15 seconds. I then select
my OSM layer, and hit paste features. This can then send the computer
off again for 2 to 3 minutes or more. During this time, Windows
mistakenly tells you that Merkaartor is "Not Responding". Well, yeah
it's not responding, but that's because it is busy doing other things.

Watching the Windows task manager, Merkaartor is running at 50% (one
processor is running full out, the other varies according to the rest
of the system load. Merkaartor is also running at around 150,000k to
nearly 200,000k memory usage.

So, I'm kind of curious to know what the heck is happening for all
that time. Isn't the data all stored as XML? (I just opened one of the
.osm files, and it is just text) Copying the selected data should be
grabbing the appropriate sections of text. Pasting to a new layer
should be pushing that text into a new "file", but there must be other
stuff happening too. Changing IDs, or other stuff?

Uploading the data happens pretty quickly, and then there's a lengthy
delay as the OSM server chews on the data and sends a response back...
nothing Merkaartor can do anything about there though.

Just curious about all the heavy lifting going on behind the scenes,
and if perhaps there's something not going quite right and taking a
long time in the process.
