In Tool->Style, you can choose a number of style depending on your needs.
"Mapnik" gives a map close to the OSM slippymap.

Secondly, Merkaartor being an editor, all ways are shown by default. It
makes little sense for an editor to have uneditable items ...
Thirdly, I'm not the king of tagging but it looks like, in you case, the
best way of action is to create a node rather than a polygon for this
settlement
