Subject: World's fastest computer

IBM got a nice public relations boost earlier Wednesday when Vice President
Al Gore helped to debut what Big Blue is claiming is the world's fastest
computer.

Developed in conjunction with the Energy Department's California-based
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Blue Pacific is a souped up
version of IBM's RS/6000 SP that runs IBM's Unix variant, AIX. The system
can carry out 3.9 trillion calculations per second, which is about 15,000
times faster than today's typical desktop machine, and can hold as much as
2.6 trillion bytes of memory, which is the equivalent of all the books in
the Library of Congress.

Comparing the technical capabilities of the new system with an average PC,
IBM officials said the new system can handle up to 5,856 processors vs.
one processor, 75 terabytes of memory vs. 8GB of memory, and 2.5 terabytes
of RAM vs. 256MB of RAM. The new super computer takes up 8,000 square feet
of space, as opposed to 2 square feet for a PC; weighs 105,000 pounds vs.
a PC's 19 pounds; and has 408 miles of cable vs. eight feet of cable.
