Why on earth would my mailer add such a header? That's my newsreader's job :-)

> It is somewhat rude or inconsiderate to be unix-centric.

This was directed at someone who suggested the whole world (or at least the
list readership) ought to use Emacs, vi(le), or another Unix emailer or one
displaying particular characteristics that are, however, not a de-facto
standard on the Internet unlike was implied.

>Yes, I suppose it is. Did you think I was being UNIX-centric? That
>was certainly not my intention, though I must admit a bias in that
>direction since I do not often use other systems.

It may have been you; I do not recall. Certainly it is understandable that
being familiar with a particular operating system above all others may lead
one to take some properties common to its software for granted, and then
presume everyone's software operated/ought to operate that way; such as
someone implied about email clients recently on the list whilst being
faintly derogatory towards my particular choice of email client.

>Many people do use MSWindows and Eudora. Personally, I found Eudora
>so cumbersome and troublesome that I gave up on it quickly...

Ah, so it was you. Pray tell, what do you suggest I use instead? Please
keep in mind that to be acceptable, an alternative must be stable, robust,
easy to use, not lacking in any features I use, and above all else, FREE.

>That doesn't mean it has
>no bugs, nor that it follows Internet standards.

I have perhaps encountered three or four pieces of software (real, useful
software and not computer science assignments or experiments) that are
actually devoid of any bugs in my experience. Every single other piece of
software I have ever used has had 1 or more bugs, as is to be expected as
all known programmers are human and therefore not infallible. You can read
all about my encounters with assorted software produced by particularly
fallible people and companies at
http://www.globalnet.net/~derbyshire/mrantn1.html.

As for standards, nearly all software that is expected to conform to some
standard fails to comply in at least one minor way, for exactly the same
reason it probably has at least 1 bug. I expect Eudora adheres as close or
closer to Internet RFCs than the average PC/DOS/WINDOWS email client. (I
have no information about *nix/Mac email clients.)

>In the mean time,
>I'm nearly certain that there are other free emailers out there for
>MSWindows that do this and other things (like 'References:') better.

You seem to have applied preconceptions based upon experiences with Unix to
Windows, and now to have applied preconceptions based upon experiences with
Usenet to mailing lists.
