About 20 years ago I wrote a program to tabulate and print Mersenne primes
in base 10.  Then I thought "Hey, they are very simple in a base that is a
power of 2 - just do a base conversion!"  So I did that, and to my
surprise, the two programs took almost exactly the same amount of time to
run.  Then I realized that what they were actually doing was essentially
the same (although the base conversion was a more complex program).
