Thanks to George and Brian for their attempts to solve my problems.
I should say that
1. The NFS problem was already solved here when the system was
properly configured, before I was told to remove mprime.
2. It had not been possible for me to run mprime on a local disk
because in order to get access to one
I would have needed to convince the administrator,
who was already unfriendly to the project.
3. I think in that time when I had that problem,
turning up the interval between disk writes
would have made it less probable per time to run into trouble,
but on the other hand the computing time lost in case of trouble
would have been higher by the same factor.
I used to check manually whether the mprimes were still alive
and to restart them eventually,
so the 30 min interval was just o.k.
But this is already history here, and I told it only
as an input to Aaron Blosser's question.

Another question to George which might also be of general interest:
There exist several translations of the page
prime.htm at www.mersenne.org.
Some of these sites also translate the pages
freesoft.htm, source.html, default.html, credits.htm,
range.htm, status.htm and top.htm.
Do you maintain a mailing list to inform the translators
when you change these pages?
I'm asking because I'd volunteer to translate some of these pages
(possibly including faq.htm) to Esperanto.
