I just happened to put a system together this weekend doing this very
thing.  It's been running rock solid since midday on Saturday crunching an
exponent in the 6700000 area at 0.198 per iteration.  Not bad for a $75.00
processor!  In fact, here's a part and cost breakdown of this
less-than-$400 "Mersenne machine:"

Abit BH6 board--$101
Celeron 300A (running at 450)--$75.00
Hitachi PC100 64MB SDRAM--$89.00
InWin 500A Case--$52.00
Jaton 4MB PCI Video card--$19.00
Mitsumi 1.44 Floppy--$15.00

I had an old Maxtor 512MB hard drive sitting around that I used.  I have
RedHat 5.0 (updated to the 2.0.36-1 kernel) that I installed over the
network from another computer in my network.  The Celeron didn't require
any increase in voltage beyond the normal 2.0v to hit 450.  I'm going to
add a case fan as the internal temp in the case shows 34 degrees C which is
a little higher than I'd like, but well within reason as is.  I have the
default (fairly conservative, probably) BIOS values in place and might get
a little more speed by tweaking them, but I'm not inclined to worry about
it given the bang for the buck.

I could have saved even more by going with a cheaper case and less SDRAM,
maybe getting the cost as low as $310 or so!

Yet to be purchased is a separate UPS (I'm piggy backing it off another
PC's UPS at the moment) which will set me back around $100 unless I can
find a used one in good shape somewhere.

If I only had a roomful of these things I could make a move up that
PrimeNet list...:-)
