Subject: Mersenne: Slight problem with Proxy

Hi,

I have just joined GIMPS with a dual PIII 560Mhz (500 overclocked) running
two instances of Prime95, on NT4

All is working fine except when it tries to connect to the server. What
happens is that it brings up the proxy connection, but immediately reports
an error...

Contacting PrimeNet Server.
ERROR: Primenet error: 29
Will try contacting the server again in 60 minutes.

If I try again while the connection is up, it then works.

It seems that there is not enough of a delay to wait for the proxy server to
dialup to my ISP. I am using ISDN so the delay is only in the order of one
or two seconds anyway.

I do have a file called primenet.ini with the contents...
[PrimeNet Proxy]
ProxyHost=192.168.2.1:80

Any ideas, or is a fix needed ?

The output is showing the following typical line...
Iteration 1330300 / 7964683 [16%]. Clocks:132192668 = 0.236 sec
Is this about right for my processor

Thanks,

Mike,

And I joined on August 8th, and got M8180017 to test... Does that
mean that the M7964683 was reallocated because somebody has quit
GIMPS (as I suppose it wasn't "free" earlier, or I would get it)?

Anyway, my Celeron 333 MHz (not OCed) shows 0.430 s/iter (when it has
all the CPU power), hope this helps.

Best wishes and many primes,

PrimeNet's statistics page has been updated.

        http://entropia.com/ips/stats.html

The virtual supercomputer is sustaining over 800 gigaflops, spiking into the 900
range. 30 and 31 August, for example, ran fast with record rates of 921 and 977
gigaflops. 780 PII400 years (4292 P90 years) were logged since the last update
on 28 June. The parabolic trend is slightly stronger.

scott

Hi list

Thanks for all the sugestions you made with the problems on my computer.

I've been looking at (or rather browsed through) the different things
that has been suggested could be the problem, but havn't found anything.
As it appears that it's not a normal error during startup, I've decided
just to make the program start later, as was suggested by a few of you.
I just havn't got the energy to go through every program that starts up
to see which one is to blame, since the error shouldn't be that serious,
and that it doesn't happen at every startup.

nice hunting to you all :)

regards

Subject: Mersenne: Macintosh Speeds

Okay, so I am here at my new job, got permission to install a GIMPS client on a
bunch of machines, cool. It turns out that >50% of the machines that I can
install a GIMPS client on are a specific model of Dell that when Prime95 is
running causes the video to flicker REALLY bad. So there goes about 24,000 PII
MHz down the drain because of poor design by Dell.

So in my quest to add more machines to GIMPS I run across 20+ Macs that are in
perfectly working order in a storage room. They have been obsolteted simply
because they are Macs, and are all mid range Power Macs to low end G3s. The room
with plenty of power and plenty of network drops. Perfect dedicated GIMPS
clients in my opinion!

Now my question to the list is, would I be better off having these machines
participate in GIMPS via MacGIMPS on MacOS or should I run mprime on Linux? My
main concern is performance. Which performs better on the same hardware,
MacGIMPS or mprime? I would guesstimate that they all have ~32 MB of RAM, and
those that do not can get upgraded to 32 MB easily. Which route should I take?

Thanks in advance for any help!
