I guess you've hit the memory bus' limit.  My experience with MacLucasUNIX 
is that a fast memory bus makes a big difference in speed with the same 
CPU.  I've also noticed that a computer with mprime running on both CPUs 
on maximum nice level are noticeable slower at running any memory IO 
intensive applications at the same time, even when they create virtualy no 
extra load.  One mprime process goes unnoticed under the same conditions.
