Thanks to the people who pointed out that findfast causes such hard drive
activity. Since this is windows 2000, findfast is actually called the
'indexing service', but it is the same thing.
I've disabled it, and in the past few days have not had any problems, so
I'm reasonably certain that it was at fault.
