the kernel is 2.2.13-5.0 which is just one shy of the latest production
2.2.14 kernel.  I can't imagine there's any SMP specific issues here, but I
dunno.  Or by 'recent' do you mean 2.3.xx experimentals?

X wasn't the issue.  After doing a few odds and ends on the machine that
caused memory to get swapped around, it started cacking out all on its own
with the two instances running concurrently and nothing else.

I went ahead and 'quit gimps' on that box.  I can't afford to dedicate any
more time to getting #$@#$ ILLEGAL SUMOUTS.  Gotta get back to hacking on
the oracle database whats this machine's true purpose in life.
