Subject: Mersenne: Modem Dun causing Illegal Sumouts?

Hi Folks,

I recently upgraded my Win98 HP PIII 533 machine to use
Microsoft's DUN with the 128 bit encryption (the latest
available from Microsoft). Now, fairly reliably, whenever I
start the modem to make a connection to my ISP, I get an
Illegal Sumout error on prime95. If I stop prime95, start my
modem, then continue, everything works fine. But 1 out of 3
times, if I let prime95 run while starting my modem, I get
the sumout error.

Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone have any links with
Microsoft to research/report this problem?

Thanks,

- -Allan

Subject: Mersenne: Factor98

Hi all

factor98:

Where can I find the p-1 tool factor98.exe? As far as I know it supports
p-1 factoring furteher than prime95 (prime95 only allows a b1 up to
700M). is this tool still available?

memory usage:

How much memory does an ecm test stage 2 need? Asm much as an p-1
stage 2 of the same exponent?
What about an LLtest of an 10Mdigitnumer?

Thanks
Reto

As Stefanovic as already replied, yes, it's still out there. Further,
I still have several Factor98 (and Factor95) save files for certain
small Mersennes.

Near the bottom of http://mersenne.org/ips/tops.shtml
is a "Browser Quick Stats Tip" that is...
http://mersenne.org/cgi-bin/primenet_user.pl?UserID=youraccountID

When I use this link, after replacing my account id, I consistently get
a blank page returned. This problem started happening about the time of
the server's move south a couple of weeks ago.

Cheers... Russ (who is too concerned with his top producer's standing)

Uh oh, a link to an almost forgotten web page of mine! The Fact98.exe file is
fine (now, I had to make it chmod a+r again), but the checkpoint files may be
out of date - check with Will Edington whether he has ones that are factored
further. There are not that many on my page, anyways, and the uploading
never worked particularly well..

Please note that Factor98 has no stage 2 - factoring to high bounds with
Prime95 will be about 20 times (rough guess) faster. Also, IMHO trying to
find a factor with extremely high P-1 bounds is rather inefficient, I think
it would almost always be better to spend the time on a few ECM curves.

> Anyone else for the other questions?

Hmmm... the size of residues are the same for ECM and P-1 for the same
exponent, and I *think* ECM needs to store only one residue per entry in the
multiples-of-stage-1-residue, in which case the memory requirement for ECM
and P-1 would be roughly the same for the same exponent and the same bounds,
but I'm not quite sure.

Ciao,
  Alex.

prime95 should be faster and it supports b1 up to 4 billion.

>How much memory does an ecm test stage 2 need?

The readme.txt file indicates you need a minimum of FFT size times
192 bytes. That is, to ECM the 20th Fermat number an FFT size of
64K is used and a minimum of 12MB is needed.

> As much as an p-1
>stage 2 of the same exponent?

P-1 stage 2 can operate on much less memory - as low as 32 * FFT size
or in the case of the 20th Fermat number, 2MB.

>What about an LLtest of an 10Mdigitnumer?

Here you are using a 1792K FFT size. Times 8 bytes per double equals
14MB. Add a little bit of overhead for code and sine/cosine tables and you
get around 16MB.

George

Henk, that is a different report. I already know about it and it works
just fine. The problem one returns a 1 line report; or it used to.

same problems here :( two or three weeks ago the link worked sometimes,
but since then again, nothing but a blank page.

Russel, this is a different report page.

btw. would it be possible to include this single line of information
from the other report in this one?

another question: when is the next server synchronization planed?
My report gets longer and longer ;) and I have difficulties to find
the latest results in the list.
Alternativley, would it be possible to have something like
.../cgi-bin/primenet_results.pl?UserID=youraccountID&UserPW=yourpassword
which reports the results of, lets say the last 2-4 weeks or so, sorted
by (the incoming) time?

regards

Siegmar

"Contains No Data" is the usual response. Anyone else getting lucky?

Lately, the link has been working... However, the top producers
report must have been updated on the most recent hour for it to
work! The last several weeks, it hasn't been updated
automatically every hour (more like every couple of days)...
If it hasn't been updated on the most recent hour, you may get
a blank page or a "document contains no data" message...
