What I experienced is a good illustration of this. I bought 
a flawed Intel Cape Cod motherboard with a 800 MHz PIII.
This board was replaced by Intel with a new Vancouver
board using the new Direct RDRAM memory (for free!).
The iteration time for Prime95 was improved by 40%
using the same CPU!
