As for hyperthreading - I believe the development kernel (2.5.x) has support for hyperthreading. You will almost certainly need to build your own custom kernel to obtain this support.
Why so? A lot of distros come with kernels that support SMP and all kinds of bizarre network and video cards by default.
Or do you mean that *right now* 2.5.x is too unstable for some distros to include?
