oh, nice.. I didn't manage to quite get that to work as is, but ended up with:

url = https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa.git
fetch = +refs/heads/*:refs/remotes/origin/*
fetch = +refs/merge-requests/*/head:refs/remotes/origin/merge-requests/*
