Explictly set and clean test work directories

The Slave code writes some files to the configured work_dir. The default is
'work' in the current working directory. The result is that the tests can
scribble 'work' directories in bunch of places (especially for the external
tests, which can change current working directory), and there are some test
output directories which aren't cleaned up by 'make clean'.
