Hi,
I saw your discussion and played around with a different idea, namely
generating "readable" IDs from existing IDs rather than trying to get
the ID itself to look nice. The results can be seen on my horrible blog
("blergh") http://blergh.21er.org/index.php?cat=5 where there's also a
proof-of-concept hack in C. The whole thing was quickly put together in
a few hours and could certainly be improved.
