You might well be right, that might have the same effect. But nobody is doing that, and I am looking for ways to extract useful information out of what people are doing today. My argument was simply that the current pattern of signing messages is sending a useful signal. I am sure there are other ways to send useful signals. Enumerating all of them might be fun, but I'm not sure how useful an exercise that is. Nor does it nullify the value of the signal people are sending today...
