I think everyone who looks at mixnets wants to better understand the tradeoffs between different designs, and between different parameter choices in those designs. Maybe "Systematization of Knowledge" type papers would help, but the design space is so complex I doubt that would be enough. One thing that might help would be an easy-to-run simulation tool (you input lots of parameters describing your traffic and some mixnet, and it outputs metrics on security, performance, reliability, etc).
