Currently, to use a newer kernel, you should focus on mainline. We have 4.14 recipe ready for use. The 4.9 GA BSP integration is in progress but not finished yet. Some patches are in master-next for the test. Honestly, I'd focus on meta-freescale as it is a leaner layer but it is hard to advise without knowing all the requirements. -- Otavio Salvador O.S.
