Yes I figured in the meantime. Is it required?

I think you need to add the file atf-uboot.ub to the boot partition.

so we do only support FIT files (u-boot.itb), but this (u-boot.itb) is not
deployed.

I thought there also was a full non-ATF (EL3) mode into the kernel, not
sure though.

At least I could boot into Linux today with a lot of workarounds. I
documented them in my email thread and will follow-up on meta-xilinx.

The meta-xilinx guys seem to only boot QEMU, which does not take the SPL
boot path. I have seen a path to make it do so, seems not applied.
