ResEdit is still my preference. You can always Get info (at ResEdit) on a
sample MC stack, look at the file type and creator, set the same for your
downloaded generic stacks.
If you need something more handy, consider Snitch - a finder integrated
utility to change file type easily - although I haven't been using it for
years...
