I'm sorry, I misread your question the first time. Yes, it is much
easier in HyperCard than in MetaCard. But on MC on the Mac it isn't too
bad. On Windows, it is much more difficult to do.
On the Mac, you need to send an AppleEvent. On Windows, you need to read
the registry. I will privately send you a copy of a mailing list message
I saved that explains it. I am not surprised you could not find the
answer in the archives. I think only the last 2 or 3 weeks of entries
are available (at least, that's all I could find the last time I tried
searching for something.)
