MetaCard allocates memory on the system heap so the RAM usage can exeed
what you have allocated to the application itself (a few other
applications do that as well). This has the advantage that it allocates
just as much memory as it needs, which is normal for other operating
systems, but the MacOS memory manager had to be compatible to
applications that where written before there was a multi finder (that
was when you could only start one application at once).
There are some system utilities that do not work properly with this kind
of memory management, so there is the TMEM resource in MetaCard whereby
you can switch this behaviour off. It is documented.
I am not shure how the carbon API will be maped to MacOS X.
