The problem is that the alpha version you downloaded isn't complete.  It
assumes that you have already downloaded the current shipping version of
MetaCard - 2.2.5 and transfered some components from that version to use
with the alpha.  To get the alpha to work, download the current 2.2.5
shipping version.  Then copy the files mchome.mc and mchelp.mc from that
version into the folder you put the alpha in - those files haven't been
updated for the alpha test.  That should give you a folder containing the
MetaCard engine you downloaded, the file mctools.mc (which came with the
alpha), and those two files.  It should now work.

Note that being an alpha the engine won't be as stable as the current
shipping release.  You should have a backup of your computer or run it on a
non-critical machine to make sure you don't lose anything if anything goes
wrong.  Your feedback and suggestions about any version of MetaCard are
