is there a remote file...?

Hi all,

How do you check to see if a remote file exists? 
For example, how would you know if the file
"http://www.someplace.com/mystack.mc" 
is really there?

I've tried something like 
if there is a URL "http://www.someplace.com/mystack.mc"

but that seems to always returns false. So I'm sure I'm doing it wrong.
